2019-2020 VMHA Award Recipients

Coach of the Year

Presented to a VMHA coach that makes an extraordinary contribution to the Association or the game itself in addition to fulfilling coaching duties. Criteria used in this award include, team chemistry, team performance, coach communication, coach personal development and dedication.

Manager of the Year

Presented to a VMHA manager that makes an extraordinary contribution to the Association or the game itself in addition to fulfilling managerial duties. Criteria used in this award include, team organization, administration and communication.

Bob Tygat Award

Bob Tygat was a supporter and contributor in the local and professional levels of sport in Victoria. He was a Saanich Junior B Governor and served as time keeper and score keeper for Salsa Junior A (now Grizzlies) and Shamrocks lacrosse games as well as being involved in adult hockey programs.This award is presented to a “Fan” who has made a significant contribution to the betterment of the Association, by providing special support to players, teams or the Executive.

Brave Award  - Sponsored by: Team J.A.C.K. & Jack Westhaver (Journey Against Cancer and Kids)

3 weeks shy of his 6th birthday, Jack Westhaver was diagnosed with ALL: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Just hours before his diagnosis he was playing hockey, something he loved to do and something he was able to continue to enjoy thanks to the support of his community.  Although most of Jack’s 2009-2010 season was spent in the hospital and away from the rink, we know that this award inspired Jack every time he was able to go to the rink and give it a try!  The ‘first’ #1 Brave Award was presented to Jack’s family on April 3rd of 2009 as Jack was unable to attend the SMHA awards banquet due to his intensive treatment plan.  As sick as he was at the time, this award brought Jack to his feet and kept the ‘brave’ in him strong!  Today Jack is well and enjoying his favorite pastime…the game of hockey. This award is presented to a player who has been faced with adversity, challenge, illness or injury who shares Jack’s love of hockey.

Bob Lindal Award of Merit

Awarded to any parent, player, referee, team official, coach or executive member who makes an extraordinary contribution, to the Association or who demonstrates exceptional qualities that are a positive example for others, both on and off the ice. This award is presented to a “Fan” who has made a significant contribution to the betterment of the Association, by providing special support to players, teams or the Executive.

Darin Alexander Award

Awarded by the VMHA board to a player or players who best exemplify the qualities of perseverance, resiliency and character. Players eligible to receive this award have had to overcome personal challenges during the season and have used the game of hockey as a positive influence for themselves while upholding the game’s true spirit of camaraderie and competition.

U11 Most Dedicated - Charlaine Visscher

Charlaine was a dedicated hockey mom who died unexpectedly the year her son played Atom hockey.  Char is survived by her loving family and multitude of friendships. Char’s uniqueness was beautified by her dedication to her children, willingness to help others, kindness to all and love of life.This award is presented to the U11 player who most exemplifies dedication or is otherwise an “unsung hero”.

Aaron was a defenceman and this award was historically limited to defencemen. However, this award is now presented to any U13 player who most exemplifies dedication and commitment to improvement.

Doug Neilson valued good sportsmanship, leadership, enthusiasm and hustle.This award is presented to the U13 player who exemplifies sportsmanship, enthusiasm and is supportive and respectful of teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.

Tim always showed up for the game and worked hard. He was a Rec player who played with lots of heart and could be described as an unsung hero. This award is presented to the U15 Player who most exemplifies commitment to improvement.

U15 Most Dedicated - James Alexander Morin Memorial Award

The James Alexander Morin Memorial Trophy carries the inscription "Most Dedicated to the Game". This award is presented to the U15 player who most exemplifies dedication or is otherwise an “unsung hero”.

This award is presented to the player who most exemplifies commitment to improvement.

U18 Most Dedicated - Steve Simpson Award

Steve was a Rep player who could be described as an unsung hero. He was a hardnosed gritty player who was a good team player and friend both on and off the ice. While historically limited to Rep players, this award is now presented to any U18 player who most exemplifies dedication or is otherwise an “unsung hero”.

U18 Most Sportsmanlike - RK Spirit Award

Reid was very passionate about hockey and life. He always had a smile and could always be counted on to share a good joke. Reid was a hard-working player who hustled out onto the ice for each shift as if it was the first shift of the game.  He was not a selfish player and would rather pass the puck for the shot if he saw that another player was in a better position. He was always positive and encouraged fellow team mates to never give up. Reid always respected all players, coaches and referees. This award is presented to the U18 player who exemplifies sportsmanship, enthusiasm and is supportive and respectful of teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.

Ken Griffin was the father of a goaltender who passed away several years ago.This award is presented to the goalie who most exemplifies commitment to improvement.

Most Sportsmanlike Female - Howard Noble Award

Howard, who passed away from cancer, was a great contributor and supporter of minor hockey. He and his wife Marlene were busy hockey parents with three daughters that played hockey but who also found time to be involved in adult recreational hockey. This award is presented to a female player who exemplifies sportsmanship, enthusiasm and is supportive and respectful of teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.
