News and Announcements
Thursday, October 18, 7pm, Archie Browning
The Victoria Cougars are hosting a Victoria Minor Hockey night! On Thursday, October 18, at 7pm, the Cougars battle the Comox Valley Glacier Kings! Have your player wear their Icehawks jersey and your immediate family gets free admission! There will be prizes throughout the night and the Cougars will sign autographs between periods. Let’s support our local Junior B boys and fill the arena with Icehawks!
The peewee groups have been updated for the week of September 17 – 23.
The document 18-19_PeeWee_Redistribution_Teams.pdf was attached to this post.
This Saturday, September 15th, come out to Archie Browning Arena for a fun day to meet your fellow players and parents, have a hot dog, check out Ice Hawks gear and ask the board members and coaches any questions you might have.
From 11-2pm, there will be a BBQ in front of Archie Browning. We will have hot dogs, veggie dogs and drinks will be available (free for players – by donation for non-players).
Come on out for a fun (optional) skate with your new and old teammates. Coaches will be organizing fun activities such as scrimmages and games (depending on the division.) See the ice schedule on the website for exact times.
We will be holding parent meetings for each group (see schedule below), where board members and key team staff will go over the association’s expectations and answer any questions you might have. According to BC Hockey regulations, one parent for each child is required to attend a parent meeting at the start of each season, so please be sure to sign in.
All parent meetings will be held in the warm area at Archie Browning.
SOCKS & JERSEYS SALE
Since we had an opportunity to organize our equipment rooms, we have LOTS of socks and gently-used jerseys for sale. There are some cool older jerseys form previous rep teams and spring hockey. These would make great practice jerseys! They will all be on sale for $2, $5 or $10. Cash only.
We will have a few tables set up where parents are encouraged to bring used gear to swap, trade or sell. Feel free to bring it by starting at around 8am.
ICE HAWKS GEAR
We will have a table with Ice Hawks clothing (jackets, hoodies, pants, hats, etc.) to try on and order.
We’re always looking for people to help out! If you’d like to volunteer to help out with setup or BBQing, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Welcome from the President
We are so close to the start of our 2018-19 hockey season! Bust the rust sessions start soon, assessments for both our representative co-op families and our recreational families are starting soon, and before we know it, we will be into our regular season. Whether you are a rep co-op family or a recreational family, we are excited to welcome so many new and returning smiling faces to the rink.
We have had a very busy off-season preparing for all of your players to return in September. Equipment has been organized, jerseys sorted, schedules made, meetings held, tournament dates picked, player development planned…
But before the season gets into full swing, there is a long list of people to thank.
To our volunteer coaches, managers, safeties and treasurers, thank you for time, dedication and support of our young athletes. Our teams couldn’t run without all of your support.
To our board of directors, thank you for the endless hours you volunteer through the season and off to keep our association running.
To the families, thank you for your commitment, patience and encouragement. We appreciate that you are willing to devote your weekends to sit in cold arenas cheering on your players. We know that you are their biggest fans.
And especially to our players, thank you for your energy, enthusiasm and love for the game of hockey. You are the reason we all give our time and talents.
We wish you all a great season full of smiles, sweat and skills.
When are we getting back on the ice?
We will have some bust the ice sessions for our recreational families beginning September 3 through September 9 while our rep co-op families will be start assessments on September 4. Recreational assessments will begin September 10 and run until September 26. The schedules will be posted soon.
To help transition the 2009 players moving up to Atom from Novice we are going to offer six sessions in August to help adjust to full ice. The ice sessions will be a combination of practices and controlled fun scrimmage to teach the foundations of full ice gameplay, defensive and offensive concepts, rule adjustment (offside and icing) and changing on the fly. The curriculum was developed by BC Hockey coaching experts.
These sessions are completely optional and included with your player’s registration. These are non-assessed ice times before the season starts. The sessions will be all run approximately the same so if your player misses some of the ice times they will still have the opportunity to learn the theory of the rules.
The transition ice times will be primarily geared toward the 2009 players but 2008 are welcome to come out for some extra “bust the rust” ice time. Also we encourage any 2009 or 2008 players who are new to hockey to attend. All sessions will be held at Oak Bay Arena at the following date and times:
Please arrive at least half hour early to be ready to go on the ice and bring full equipment and practice sweater. Contact Rob McLean at email@example.com if you have any questions.
